Ebook About The moving story of the author's adopted Rottweiler mix, Lou, a free-thinking heroic dog who changed his life forever Born of guard dogs on a secret marijuana farm in Mendicino County, Lou truly was one dog in a million. On the winter day that the ailing, tick-infested feral pup was rescued by Steve Duno, neither dog nor man had a clue as to what they were getting into, or where the relationship would lead. Last Dog on the Hill tells the story of an indigent young Rottweiler mix who, after abandoning his pack and the hills of his birth, went on to change the lives of hundreds of people and dogs, including the author's, whose career as a behaviorist and writer was made possible through Lou's extraordinary intelligence and heart. Lou won the respect of gang members, foiled an armed robbery, caught a rapist, fought coyotes and kidnappers, comforted elderly war veterans and Alzheimer patients in their final days, taught ASL to kids, learned scores of unique behaviors and tricks, amassed a vocabulary of nearly 200 words, helped rehabilitate hundreds of aggressive dogs and saved them from euthanasia. He was also a clown, consummate performer and Steve's best friend for sixteen years. His story will make readers laugh and cry in equal measures.Book Last Dog on the Hill: The Extraordinary Life of Lou Review :
What did I like - well, I LOVED Lou, his well-written story exudes love, friendship and companionship not to mention intelligence, perception and loyalty. I've loved dogs like Lou - 9 as of today and counting. And each has been a story and a journey unto itself. What I came away not liking so much is Steve - who I could not help but perceive as a classic underachiever who clearly had talent but in all cases but his bond with Lou was unable to make a commitments to jobs, to women, to himself. Making Lou. his defacto keeper was something elze ... he certainly needed a handler and the women he chose did not seem to meet that bill - The only real emotion Steve shows in this book seems to be his undeniable love for Lou - his relationships with myriad women remain unclear - he lives with them, but I am never sure what he is to them. A roommate, a partner or "just a friend" -As someone who has had to say goodbye to many furry children over the years, I can't imagine putting my dog through the last months of Lou's life if they were suffering that much. Sometimes love really is letting go of the fear of being alone. You never lose the spirt.A Dog Mom Forever - thanks to Tasha, Trapper, Monet, Dinky, Weeds, Misha the Wonderdog, Taos and Darby This is a true story of an exceptional dog and an exceptional relationship between dog and person. It is inspiring and a joy to read. Lou and his person (Steve Duno) had a uniquely wonderful relationship and both fortunate and unfortunate circumstances which deepened their bond. Lou's story is a testimony to how insightful and understanding a dog can be. Truly remarkable. As with nonfiction, real-life dog stories you may want to stop at the beginning of the last chapter as we know the inevitable. It made me appreciate my own very intelligent dog even more and inspired me to strive harder to help her realize and enjoy her potential. It also helped me appreciate more deeply the special relationship I have with my own dog. This is absolutely a must for every dog person and for those who "don't get it" about why people and dogs can have such special relationships. Steve Duno's experiences as a dog trainer are eye-opening about how little some dog owners understand their own dogs and how much richer their relationship can become with insight and training. An absolute delight to read!
